Once every few months one of our Mac Pro towers goes to a black or blank screen but the mouse cursor shows. Nothing will wake it, or get it to change from this kinda-frozen state.
One fix that works (some of the time) is to hit:
Command-Control-Eject
Sometimes this will get the Mac out of its funk, and you can see your login screen again.
